The Regional Climate Protection Plan Strategy Vote on April 19th!

350 Bay Area

The Bay Climate Action Plan Campaign has informed El Cerrito Progressives that the Air District Board will vote on the Regional Climate Protection Strategy on April 19, 2017, and is asking those who support Climate Action to be there in support.

In 2013, the Action Plan Campaign petitioned the Air District Board  to commit the Bay Area to reducing greenhous gas emissions to 80% below 1990 levels by 2050, and to implement a program to achieve the goal of emissions reduction.

We insisted on the commitment, and we got it! After a year of steady advocacy, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District Board adopted a Climate Resolution that satisfied our requirements.

In 2014 the Air District began the process of raising program funds and assigning dedicated staff. In fact the Air District’s climate staffing rose from one full time person to a manager and seven full time staff. This would not have happened without 350 Bay Area’s initiative and persistence, specifically the work of many of you, the volunteers who came to Board meetings to press the case.

And yet we still waited. The Air District was to adopt it’s Clean Air Plan, to include the Regional Climate Protection Strategy in 2015. We’ve been patient and persistent pressing for this action.

At long last the Regional Climate Protection Strategy is on the table. On Wednesday, April 19 the Air District Board is scheduled to vote to adopt the long anticipated Regional Climate Protection Strategy as part of its 2017 Clean Air Plan. It’s an historic, ambitious, first-in-the-nation, and visionary document laying out a path for the Bay Area to do our share for the earth and all living things on it by reducing our emissions of climate destroying GHGs to 80% below 1990 levels by 2050.

If implemented as we envision, it would put the Bay Area in the forefront of State, national and international leadership in combating climate catastrophe.

Be there for the vote. It will take courage to implement bold enough actions to achieve the goal. We need to show our support every step of the way. Tell the Board how important this is to you and all the people and other living things you love.
